We all know the wonders of CBD, and maybe even a bit about its fascinating history! Heck—maybe you’ve even tried a product or two in your time! But when it comes to exploring the vast CBD landscape and finding the exact right product for you, things can get a little tricky. There are so, so, SO many unique CBD products out there, all with different perks and possibilities. To help you out on your quest, we’ve put together a little guide with out absolute favorite CBD products for sale, including a little background information on what exactly CBD is and a bit more on that fascinating history we mentioned. Let’s get to it!
What Is CBD?
CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is one of over 400 naturally occurring chemical compounds in the cannabis plant genus. This, you may already know. What you might not have heard of yet is the term “cannabinoid.” Cannabinoids are essentially extra-special chemical compounds that can communicate with cannabinoid receptor cells in our brain, which are part of something called the “endocannabinoid system.” This ability to communicate allows for cannabinoids to produce varying reactions. CBD is one of just 113 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant genus. Another famous (or should I say infamous) cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC. Why is it, though, that THC is so notorious, and CBD just not became widely accepted as a safe and commonplace holistic supplement.
Basically, this comes down to the way in which each cannabinoid communicates within the endocannabinoid system. THC binds directly and firmly with the receptor cells, rendering it psychoactive. This means that it has the ability to get you high, which, as we know, is kind of the whole thing behind its notorious, “infamous” reputation. Conversely, CBD binds indirectly (or not at all) and weakly with the receptor cells, rendering it non-psychoactive. Rather, it can produce a relaxing, calming effect, as well as a perk in your mood—but no such intoxication as the one THC produces.
A Little History Lesson
Now that understand the major, crucial difference between THC and CBD, we can better understand why CBD was tucked away in the shadows for so long. As mention, the hemp plant has naturally high levels of CBD; what we didn’t mention is that it also has naturally low levels of THC. On the other hand, the marijuana plant has naturally high levels of THC and low levels of CBD. Because of THC’s potent intoxicating abilities, the marijuana plant has been kept federally illegal, and so have its counterparts, like the hemp plant and all other cannabinoids associated with it (i.e. CBD). All of that changed, however, when the 2018 Farm Bill was passed, which essentially legalized the hemp plant and all hemp-derived products on a federal level. As we now know, this includes CBD. To protect the safety and quality of this passing, however, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) made a very specific stipulation: a CBD product is only considered federally legal if it contains no more than 0.3% of THC.
Now to get to the fun stuff! CBD gummies are an all time favorite, and quite a popular treat. The obvious reasons being that they’re, well, delicious! Not only that, but they come in a massive variety of flavors, guaranteed to please even the pickiest of eaters. More of a classic honey or vanilla person? There’s a gummy for that! Do you prefer to live on the wild side with sour watermelon or strawberry-kiwi twist? There’s a gummy for that! No matter what flavor profile you’re looking to satisfy, you can find what you’re looking for.
Deliciousness is not the only perk of this CBD product, though; they’re convenient and efficient! Rather than have to measure out your own dose, like you would have to with oil, these little chewy candies are already measured out for your convenience. This removes all the risk of human error, as well as the potential mess. Furthermore, they’re easy to pop on the go. Simply toss the delicious little gift of nature into your mouth and chew!
CBD topicals are a whole other kind of product. For starters, there is no ingestion involved. As the title suggests, they’re applied topically to the skin. The variety of CBD topicals is just as variable as the flavors of CBD gummies. One topical we love in particular, though, is CBD cream! This luxurious product is not solely for the health benefits—it’s a beauty product as well. Just like any other body cream or lotion, each one is different in viscosity and purpose. Topicals are made by measuring out different balances of fats, waxes, water, and oils. CBD creams have a lower water content, giving them that thick, creamy texture we know and love. Not only can this be hydrating and help you maintain that baby soft skin, but it can also be great for skin irritation and conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. This is partly due to CBD’s potential anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce swelling and irritation associated with certain dermatological conditions.
Another popular topical is salve. Unlike creams, salves have a higher wax content, giving them that trademark viscous, somewhat sticky consistency. This CBD product is primarily meant to help relieve bodily discomfort, aching joints, or stressed muscles. Again, this has to do with CBD’s potential anti-inflammatory properties, only this time it goes beyond the surface of red, flakey skin, and instead is used to soothe pain associated with inflammation in the joints and muscles. This can be great for all kinds of levels of need. Whether it be an occasional athlete or a person struggling to manage arthritis, it is possible that a CBD salve may help manage this type of bodily discomfort.
Is it Safe?
Ingesting CBD products has minimal risk associated with it. Common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and an increase in blood pressure. On the other hand, topical products carry less risk since there is no ingestion. Regardless, it is important to speak with a medical professional if you’re considering incorporating any kind of CBD product into your everyday routine.
